Position Title:
IT & Network Specialist Job Summary:
The IT Systems & Network Specialist provides advanced technical support and administration for the Fire District's network, server, and systems infrastructure. This position supports the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of all network and system components to ensure secure, efficient, and reliable IT operations across all facilities. The role also supports integration with electronic and radio-based hardware and participates in technology projects that enhance the District's infrastructure. This position contributes to major infrastructure initiatives and provides technical expertise across networking, server management, and system integrations. An electronics background and possession of a Technician Class License are preferred but not required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
? Supports and advances the Fire District's goals and mission through effective IT infrastructure support. ? Administers, monitors, and maintains servers, virtualization platforms, and storage systems, ensuring high availability, performance, and disaster recovery readiness. ? Designs, configures, and troubleshoots LAN, WAN, wireless networks, switches, routers, firewalls, and VPNs. ? Maintains and manages user accounts, group policies, and security controls within Active Directory, Azure, or equivalent systems. ? Plans and leads system and network upgrades, ensuring cybersecurity best practices and minimal system disruption. ? Implements and maintains monitoring, alerting, and performance-reporting tools for infrastructure health. ? Oversees backup systems and processes to safeguard data integrity across networked resources. ? Supports cloud services and hybrid integrations (e.g., Microsoft 365, Azure) in alignment with district infrastructure strategy. ? Helps develop, update, and maintain documentation on system configurations, network topology, and operational procedures. ? Supports and assists with database modifications, web page updates, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) integration as required to maintain operational efficiency and data accessibility. ? Engages with vendors during project phases, such as hardware procurement, implementation, and upgrades. ? Provides technical expertise for complex issues requiring in-depth troubleshooting and systems analysis. ? Supports voice, video, and data systems including VOIP, security systems, and access-control systems. ? Performs system patching, firmware updates, and scheduled maintenance in compliance with security policies. ? Participates in technology planning, risk assessment, and infrastructure improvement initiatives. ? Assists in project work including cabling coordination, server or network installations, and system reconfigurations. ? Advises CIO on technology standards, system lifecycles, and infrastructure planning. ? Performs other related duties as assigned under the general supervision of the CIO. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
?
Detailed understanding of networking principles:
routing, switching, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and subnetting. ? Working knowledge of virtualization and cloud environments, and ability to integrate them with on prem infrastructure. ? Competence in server administration (Windows Server, backup, patching, domain services). ? Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices, firewalls, endpoint security, and network segmentation. ? Exposure to electronic or communications hardware, systems integration, or radio-related equipment is a plus. ? Problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills, with ability to work under minimal supervision. ? Effective verbal and written communication skills, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences. ? Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently, prioritize effectively, and adapt to changing needs. ? Efficient analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and clearly with users. ? Ability to work independently and exercise initiative in managing and resolving IT issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
? Associate or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. ? Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in systems, network, or infrastructure administration. ? Experience with public-sector (or similarly regulated) environment is preferred. ? Valid Florida Driver's License. (An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience may be considered to meet qualifications.)
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS
?
Preferred:
CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, or equivalent certifications. ?
Desired:
certifications in systems, networking, or security (e.g., CCNA, Microsoft, etc.). ? Technician Class License (FCC) and electronics / communications experience preferred, though not required.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
During emergency conditions, all employees are considered emergency service workers. Employees may be required to report to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
? Ability to sit, stand, or walk for lengthy periods. ? Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. ? Ability to use hands/fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. ? Requires good vision, hand/eye coordination and hearing (with or without devices); Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. ? Ability to speak clearly and effectively. ? Ability to perform moderate lifting (up to 10-20 lbs. at a time); occasional lifting and/or move up to 30lbs. ? ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed in a professional office or data center setting. Ambient noise is generally low to moderate. Occasional visits to field facilities or network closets may be required.
